ACTION FOR CLIMATE CHANGE

Thank you for visiting our website.

Welcome to the third edition of our Action for Climate Change news page.

The Action for Climate Change program was launched unofficially some ten months ago.  We have reviewed our carbon forest capacity in this initial 12 month period to see a potential of 5,500 tonnes of carbon being stored in native vegetation on our sites.  This is a lower number than first anticipated and is due to it taking a longer period of time for us receiving accreditation of our 'Island' site in Victoria.  We anticipate that once finalised, this will provide us with a more efficient process for the accreditation of subsequent sites.

Carbon forest sites are being selected first and foremost on their positive outcomes to the natural environment.  Selection is based upon the principles for carbon storage in native vegetation developed in Kyoto.

The first of these sites, known as the W. James Whyte Reserve or 'The Island' comprises over 200 hectares.  It is situated near Bacchus Marsh, approximately 50 kms west of Melbourne.  'The Island' is significantly degraded and major plantings over the next five years will see it restored to environmental health.  Essential activities for the establishment of a successful forest include pest control, exclusion fencing and the establishment of over 150,000 trees, shrubs and grasses.

We are proud to announce a new relationship with the Kangaroo Valley Tourist Association in its actions to become one of the developed world's first carbon neutral tourist destinations.  An opportunity is being offered to members and stakeholders to assist the Action for Climate Change program in developing a series of carbon forests across Australia.  The scheme will also be available to visitors to the Valley with a display in the Visitors Centre and collection box.  We look forward to progressing this initiative into the future and will keep you informed of outcomes.  The Kangaroo Valley Tourist Association covers information about its program with a reciprocal link to the CVA website.  Feel free to visit www.visitkangaroovalley.com.au

We have also completed work on the Padaminka Nature Refuge in Queensland, a former sugar cane farm and cattle property to assist in the rehabilitation of this land to restore it back to its native flora and attract native birds and animals.  Our objective for this project was to re-establish approximately 2.5 hectares of native forest through the planting and maintenance of 7,000 native seedlings.  The ultimate goal for Padaminka is to return the land as near as possible to its natural state.

Make Your Pledge - The theme for World Environment Day, June 5th 2008, is climate change with a focus on moving towards a low carbon economy and lifestyle.  "Kick the Habit" (the 'carbon' habit) is the United Nations theme for this event.  Make a Pledge to record your personal commitment to reducing your impact on the environment.  Your commitments will be recorded and become part of a national total for pledged carbon footprint reductions.  Make Your Pledge Now....

The Action for Climate Change program is based on practical actions both by you, our supporters, and also by us in providing a series of carbon forests across Australia.

Thank you for your interest and I urge you to support us through your actions and by donating to the program and supporting its principles.
